Bailey Head, Open Market, July 1973 – Oswestry held its first market in 1190 and there are still active markets open in Oswestry today. The Bailey Head forms a natural marketplace; markets of corn, butter and cheese were held here regularly on a Wednesday & Saturday drawing people from Shrewsbury and Chester because of the convenience of the nearby railway. Two important public buildings stand on two sides of the square; the Guildhall built in 1893 and the modern market hall.
